infra|vergence at ISEA2011

Our project infra|vergence was included in the electronic arts festival ISEA2011. ISEA (formerly Inter-Society for the Electronic Arts) is “an international nonprofit organization fostering interdisciplinary academic discourse and exchange among culturally diverse organizations and individuals working with art, science and technology”. This year’s festival was held in Istanbul between the 14th and the 21st of September. infra|vergence was featured in the Metaverse Papers sessions, “a virtual paper session delivered in a standalone virtual world by avatars whose presence is augmented by the voices of their handlers.”

“The project was conceptualized by Elif Ayiter and Lanfranco Aceti and was directed, captured and video edited by Elif Ayiter, aka. Alpha Auer, who also created the virtual architecture and the avatar apparel.” We are grateful to Elif for her diligent work and invaluble help preparing the presentation.

The project’s objective is to employ Immersive visualizations to map the dynamic form of the Metaverse. This will be achieved by creating a representation of its network infrastructures, the multitude of communication and transportation networks that span between its digital & physical states, from : online social spaces, 3-D immersive worlds, geospatial worlds and the physical world. infra|vergence is a research/project into how to map the scale & extents of the metaverse based on passively capturing network data flowing through this complex infrastructural nexus. infra|vergence is also a project/research. By focusing on the divergent/convergent qualities of the metaverse, a visualization will emerge showing not only a quantitative representation of this network, but also an expression of its qualities.
